Once the hold of Duke Asterlin ap Fiona, the Duchy of Freedom was given over to Duke Macluagh upon Asterlin's quests into the Dreaming and his search for the gates to Arcadia. Duke Macluagh renamed the duchy the Duchy of History and his rule was long and bloody, comprised mostly of severe anti-commoner sentiment, destruction of nearly every freehold in the Boston area, and fever pitched battles that carried the Accordance war well into present day in Boston. Driven mad by his own power and the glamour of staying locked in Boston's only remaining freehold, Macluagh finally lost his seat to death in early 2003. The freehold was quickly parceled out as a motley and a tenuous peace and cooperative rule were set up. The tenuous state of affairs continued until Boston invasion by the Caillaech Bur, the White Hag, a fomorian mostly fallen from power who tried to claim Boston as her own - and failed against the combined strength and unity of its people.
Upon Queen Mab's defeat in Fiore in 2004, Duke Asterlin was called by the Dreaming to return from quest. The Duchy he once held was granted - by popular voice - to then Baroness Shayndel Paendrag. The Duchy of History was recently redrafted back to the Duchy of Freedom and redivided into its original county and barony lines. The Duchy that had long been the hot seat of unrest, both in mortal and fae worlds, finally stabilized politically; the commoners and nobles have finally managed to find a truce born of common purpose and necessity and from the hag's defeat rose a sort of Duchy-wide feeling that to tangle with one Bostonian, was to tangle with all of them - and commoner and noble alike liked it that way.
More recently, the Duchy has become the seat for the Crown Princess Shayndel Paendrag ni Eiluned when she was named the Summer Regent for Apples with Asterlan's sacrifice to activate the Arcadian gate.
The Ducal Heraldry: A shield azure,
a stag springing argent. In chief argent an arrow azure.
In heraldry
blue represents strength and loyalty and silver peace and sincerity. The stag
is the symbol for peace and harmony, while the arrow is martial readiness. A fitting
combination of unity for a duchy always ready to fight for what it believes in.
